Skype: Expanding Student Learning Outside the Classroom Walls

August 22, 2012

First and Second Graders at PCSC are using Skype to connect to the outside world and make learning more meaningful!!! Click here to see!!

Our 1st graders started a project this week called “My Name Around the World”. They are investing the meaning of their names through different collaborative groups and sharing what they learned on their classroom blog. They got the opportunity to Skype a Ball State professor from Kenya to find out what her name means.

Our 2nd graders are learning about the different types of communities: urban, rural, and suburban. What better way to do that than to collaborate through Skype!! Over the next couple weeks, they also plan to use Google Maps to discover the differences in the community types  and Google SketchUp (3D-drawing) to express their understanding of the topic.

My name is Brooke Busse. I am the Elementary eLearning Coach for PCSC and am entering my 7th year in education. I believe technology has the power to maximize student learning!!!
