1st Grade Concept Mapping

October 30, 2012

Concept mapping is using a diagram to show the relationship among concepts.  There are many kinds of maps that we use to help us understand our thinking and map out information.  We have recently been working with webs.  Every week in first grade we read a new story and study a new skill and concept.  Students were not engaged when participating in a whole group learning activity on the chalkboard or chart paper to discuss the concept of our story and creating our concept map.  So we began using our iPads.  The kids were so excited!  Every child was engaged and very creative with their thinking.  We began by learning how to use the Inspiration app on the iPad.  Then, we brainstormed the topic of our concept map so students had a starting point and they were off!  We will move on to using Popplet next.
